Revival!

Church revivals are a staple here in the bible belt, but this billboard announcement goes a bit further than the usual. And I bet there was fire aplenty coming from the pulpit during the services.

A Dog(wood) Walk

This unusually warm and early spring has sent the flowering trees and shrubs into a frenzy of color. This is what we see on our daily walk; come go with us.

It's a tough job, but someone has to do it! Y'all come back real soon now, heah?

Herding sheep

We saw a sheep herding demonstration over the weekend.

Nothing serious, just moving the woolies around a bit for the tourists.

But it was a nice reminder of what's coming up next month.

A day at the beach

Just outside Allardt I saw these ladies enjoying the warm spring weather. And this time there was no jealous bull around to warn them off or to question my bravery. But the farm owner did come out to determine why some geezer with a camera was photographing his land and livestock. The life of a blogger is filled with challenges!

Before you reap, you must sow

The first weekend in October each year the nearby village of Allardt has its Pumpkin Festival. The biggest attraction is the contest for the largest pumpkins. Otherwise it's music and vendors, all the usual festival things. The pumpkin weigh off is the big deal. Big as they are, however, none can compete with their signature water tower.

But driving through last week I was struck by the proximity of the flowering redbuds and dogwoods with the giant pumpkin tower. Yes, it is time to be thinking about planting those winning seeds, making sure the soil has all the right nutrients, water, organic matter, or whatever to help carefully selected seeds grow into monsters that will never see a pie. But if they win, there will be a few dollars prize money and bragging rights that will last for a full year. Gentlemen, man your gardens!
